Invasive and Noxious Weeds

The spread of invasive and noxious weeds are a serious concern in the Dakota Prairies RC&D area. The Council has worked diligently to provide resources and technical assistance to help educate landowners on legal responsibilities, identification, and control options related to these serious pests; pests that have negative environmental impacts on plant and animal diversity and production, and on the financial impacts to landowners, producers, and others who enjoy the outdoor experiences that are available in North Dakota.

Dakota Prairies RC&D has also been involved locally and statewide with grant opportunities that help to address this concern. The Council works with Soil Conservation District and County Weed Board partners to provide funding support for herbicide and biological control of invasive and noxious weeds in targeted locations throughout the Council area.

All previous sources of funding have been utilized for project activities like those above. However, the Council recently submitted a grant pre-proposal to the National Fish and Wildlife Foundation to hopefully provide some funding for continued education and control project activities.  If the pre-proposal is selected for further consideration, the Council will submit a full proposal later this summer or fall.

Dakota Prairies RC&D continues to seek out additional revenue sources that can be utilized by sponsor-partners in this ongoing battle to control invasive weeds on private lands. If you know of opportunities where Council assistance could be utilized to help obtain additional funding, please contact the Dakota Prairies RC&D office.
